An introduction to motorcycle insurance in Canada

Matt Hands, VP, Insurance and MoneySense
Motorcycle insurance works much the same as car insurance in that there are mandatory and optional coverages. Depending on your province, there are slightly different rules and regulations. Knowing the requirements can help you get the best motorcycle insurance quote with the right level of coverage for your personal situation.
There is also a graduated licencing for riders – not only does this dictate whether you can legally ride a bike, but it will also impact the motorcycle insurance rate you receive. In Ontario, there are four types of vehicles that require a motorcycle (M) class of licence to drive on public roads: motorcycles, motor tricycles, limited-speed motorcycles (LSMs) and motor-assisted bicycles (mopeds). There are also different M licence types tied to the kind of bike you want to ride – standard M class, M with condition L, and M with condition M.
Make sure you get the coverage and licence type you need to ensure you can legally enjoy riding your motorcycle in Canada.

How to get cheap motorcycle insurance
Shop and compare
Every year, you can compare quotes from multiple providers to see who will give you the cheapest motorcycle insurance.
Increase your deductible
A deductible is the amount you have to pay in the event of a claim. If you can afford a higher deductible, your insurance premiums will come down.
Install anti-theft technology
Your insurer may even reward you with discounts for installing technology that reduces the chance of theft. This also helps reduce the chances of you making a claim.
Take a motorcycle course
Insurers like to see safe riders, so graduating from an accredited motorcycle school can reduce rates substantially.
Pay premiums annually
Riding season may only be from May to October, but even if you want to cancel, you may still owe the rest of your premiums. Save up, pay in one lump sum, and your insurer will thank you.
Join the club
Some insurance companies offer discounts to members of well-known motorcycle riders clubs. Also remember to ask about savings with unions or alumni.
Maintain a clean driving record
Just like auto insurance, the best way to continually save money is to keep your driving record free from accidents and tickets.
Buy a lower CC bike
Less power is a sure-fire way to reduce the cost of motorcycle insurance. But you might be better off waiting until you can afford the vehicle you want and its insurance.
Bundle existing policies
If you have tenant, home insurance, or auto insurance, bundling them together with one company can help you save money.
Make sure your motorcycle is fully protected
