What is Super Visa Insurance?

Matt Hands

Introduced in 2011, the super visa is an option for parents and grandparents of Canadian citizens and permanent residents to visit relatives in Canada for extended periods of time without the need to renew their status.

Among the eligibility requirements for a parent and grandparent super visa is proof of valid super visa insurance. This specific type of insurance guarantees that visitors can cover their own costs if they become sick or injured in Canada. Super visa insurance provides coverage for issues such as emergency medical and dental care, hospitalization, prescription medication and repatriation of remains.

How Super Visa works as travel insurance

The super visa was introduced by the Government of Canada in 2011 to reduce bureaucratic backlog and alleviate long wait times for people applying for long-term Canadian visitor visas. For citizens and permanent residents of Canada who have parents and grandparents living in other countries, the super visa allows families to reunite in Canada without lengthy wait times - the average super visa application processing time is about eight weeks.

Unlike other forms of travel insurance, super visa insurance isn’t a strong suggestion from the government - it’s a requirement. Since it’s something you have to purchase, it’s important to shop around for the best policy that suits your age, medical background and coverage needs, especially if you have pre-existing medical conditions. The cheapest option isn’t necessarily the best one. When comparing policies, be sure to read and compare each plan’s covered benefits and exclusions.

If you travel back and forth between Canada and your home country, or if you need to return home due to an emergency, many super visa insurance policies still let you keep your coverage. However, you will not have any coverage from that policy while in your country of origin, and you must notify the insurance company of any changes in your health that occur while at home before you return to Canada.

When it comes to coverage and cost, the best insurance policy for your personal situation may change over time. You don’t have to stick with one insurance company for the entire 10-year visa period. When your insurance policy period is up, you can choose to renew your existing policy or compare the best super visa insurance policies and choose a new one.
