The best TD credit cards in Canada for 2023

One of Canada’s big five banks, and the tenth-largest in North America, TD has some of the most popular credit cards on the market.

While the majority of TD’s credit cards are geared towards travel rewards, there is a TD credit card out there to meet almost every need including cash back and low interest. Below, let's take a look at the best TD credit cards in Canada.

Best overall TD credit card's take

For frequent Aeroplan flyers who want a more straightforward, easy-to-use travel card, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Infinite* Card is for you. With its partnership with Aeroplan, this co-branded credit card offers an array of perks and features tailored towards frequent flyers.

This card is the best airline travel credit card on the market.  Users can earn 1.5 points for every dollar spent on eligible gas, grocery and direct through Air Canada purchases (including Air Canada Vacations) and 1 point per dollar on everything else.

  • Welcome bonus: earn up to 50,000 Aeroplan points. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Anniversary bonus: earn up to 20,000 Aeroplan points. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Aeroplan points can be redeemed for flights on Air Canada or over 27 Star Alliance member airlines (including United Airlines and Lufthansa, to name a few)
  • Access to Air Canada perks: first bag checked free on Air Canada flights for the primary cardholder and up to eight travel companions (up to $30 in savings per traveller on flights across Canada and the US) plus the ability to earn credits towards achieving elite airline status
  • Up to $100 in Nexus Membership reimbursements available every 48 months; allowing for smoother cross-border travel within Canada or between the US
  • Comprehensive travel insurance benefits with up to 21 days of out-of-province/country medical emergency coverage, flight delay insurance, lost/delayed baggage insurance, and even hotel/motel burglary insurance for stays within the US and Canada
  • Can get double the Aeroplan points when using this card in conjunction with your Aeroplan card at participating retailers

  • The card's annual fee is $139 versus the typical $120 found on comparable rewards cards
  • $60,000 minimum income requirement could pose a barrier to some users
  • The Aeroplan points program isn’t the most straightforward, and navigating your way around the program’s quite elaborate rewards chart / understanding how to best maximize points can require considerable effort
  • Aeroplan points can’t be redeemed on any airline but only on Air Canada and Star Alliance Members
  • No airport lounge access

Best premium TD credit card's take

For those in search of a premium, high-performing card perfect for travel, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege should be on the radar.

With this card, you can earn a respectable two points per $1 on all purchases direct through Air Canada (including Air Canada Vacations), 1.5 points on eligible gas, grocery, travel, and dining, plus 1.25 points on everything else. That means that even if you decide not to book your travel through Air Canada, you’ll still earn bonus points (albeit slightly less). And, as with all Aeroplan co-branded credit cards, you can earn twice the points by using your Aeroplan membership card in tandem with the Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege at any participating retailer.

But the real draw of this card is in its wide array of travel perks: an annual round-trip companion pass from $99, wait for your flight in comfort with free access to Air Canada’s Maple Leaf Lounges at any airport in Canada or the United States, enjoy priority airport check-in and baggage handling (plus other airport upgrades), and reach Aeroplan Elite Status much quicker by earning 1,000 status qualifying miles and one status qualifying segment for every $5,000 spent on the card. Those who sign up for NEXUS can also get an annual fee rebate every 48 months (up to $100 CAD).

And, because no premium travel card would be complete without it, you’ll also get an extensive suite of travel insurance coverage ranging from travel medical to trip cancellation/interruption.

While the card’s hefty $599 annual fee can be intimidating, the amount of perks and benefits offered make it well worth it for the right cardholder.

  • Welcome bonus: earn up to 80,000 Aeroplan points. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Anniversary bonus: earn up to 35,000 Aeroplan points. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Earn two points per $1 on direct Air Canada purchases; 1.5 points per dollar on gas, groceries, travel, and dining; 1.25 points per dollar on all other purchases
  • Incredible travel perks including Maple Leaf Lounge access, priority check-in, priority baggage handling, plus more
  • Extensive travel insurance package including travel medical and trip cancellation/interruption
  • NEXUS annual fee rebate every 48 months (up to $100 CAD)

  • Steep annual fee of $599 can be too pricey for some users
  • Mostly suited for loyal Air Canada customers - those who fly other airlines or want more flexibility may want to look elsewhere

Best TD credit card for travel's take

The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite is aimed at people whose airline of choice is Air Canada as well as savvy points collectors who know their way around a rewards chart. The card’s earn rate is nine TD Rewards points for every dollar spent on travel via the Expedia for TD website, and three points per dollar on all other purchases. Since one TD Rewards point equals $0.005, that translates to an impressive 4.5% return per dollar on travel spending and 1.5% on everything else.

As far as sign-up bonuses go, the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite’s offer is hard to beat. Better yet, these points can be redeemed for flights on almost any airline of your choice as well as any of the hotel providers or vacation packages available on Expedia for TD, which offers the same inventory of travel options as

Along with its flexible airline options, another big perk of the First Class Travel Visa Infinite is its redemption system. You can redeem points in flat increments starting from just 200 points for $1, so you won’t have to wait to accrue several thousand points before you can actually start using them. You can also book your travel plans using a mix of credit and points.

This card comes with a comprehensive travel insurance package, including (but not limited to) travel medical insurance (up to $2 million for the first 21 days), trip cancellation/interruption insurance (up to $1500 per person), common carrier insurance (up to $500,000), and delayed/lost baggage insurance (up to $1000 per person). Users can also enjoy a Priority Pass membership discount to access 1200 VIP airport lounges worldwide.

  • Welcome bonus: earn up to 100,000 TD Rewards points. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Anniversary bonus: earn up to 10,000 TD Rewards points. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Earn 8 TD Points per $1 on travel through Expedia for TD, 6 TD Points per $1 on groceries and restaurants, 4 TD Points per $1 on recurring bill payments, and 2 TD Points per $1 on everything else
  • Points can be redeemed on virtually any airline or hotel of your choice through Expedia for TD
  • Redeem points in increments as low as 200 (one dollar)
  • Extensive travel package including emergency medical, trip cancellation/interruption, plus more

  • Minimum personal income of $60,00 and annual fee of 139 may be prohibitive to some users
  • Other cards of this level offer higher point value for categories like dining, entertainment, etc.
  • No complimentary airport lounge access (but there is a 20% discount off Priority Pass membership)
  • No waived foreign transaction fees - users who intend to use the card for shopping abroad may want to consider this

Best no-fee TD credit card's take

Understandably, some people don’t like paying an annual fee for their credit card. If you still want to earn travel points, then the TD Rewards Visa could be a good fit. It’ll give you a decent earnings rate for a no fee card and you’ll get access to the Expedia for TD online portal, where you can use one of the world’s largest travel platforms to earn and redeem points on hundreds of airlines.

The earn rate is four TD Rewards points for every dollar spent on Expedia for TD, three points per dollar on groceries, restaurant, and fast food purchases, two points per dollar on regularly recurring bill payments; and one point per dollar on all other purchases. Since one TD point is valued at $0.005, that works out to 1.5%, 1% and 0.5% return per dollar respectively for each of the aforementioned spending categories.

Four TD points per dollar (1.5% return) is also one of the strongest earn rates on travel spending for a no fee card. Access to Expedia for TD is also a huge benefit, as you can redeem points flexibly from almost any airline without having to worry about seat restrictions or black-out dates.

Cardholders get a discount on Priority Pass memberships, which gives you access to airport lounges, discounts at Avis and Budget Rent-A-Car locations, extended warranty, mobile device insurance of up to $1000 and purchase security. Plus, you can also redeem your TD rewards points for purchases on for Amazon Shop with Points.

  • No annual fee
  • Welcome bonus: earn a value of $65 in TD Rewards Points to use on eligible purchases plus, no Annual Fee. Conditions apply. Must apply by September 5, 2023.
  • Earn 4 TD Points per $1 on travel through Expedia for TD - one of the strongest earn rates available right now for a no-fee card
  • Earn 3 TD Points per $1 on groceries, restaurants, fast-food purchases
  • Earn 2 TD Points per $1 on regularly recurring and bill payments
  • Access to Expedia for TD for travel booking - no blackout dates or seat restrictions
  • Discount on Priority Pass membership
  • Redeem points on using Shop with Points

  • Low spending cap on groceries, restaurants, fast food and recurring bills - once $5,000 is spent annually, point value goes down to one point per dollar

Best cash back TD credit card's take

The TD Cash Back Visa Infinite Card is one of the best cash back credit cards in Canada due in large part to its welcome bonus, which gives new users the opportunity to earn 10% Cash Back on all Purchases for the first 3 months up to a total spend of $2,000. Plus, no Annual Fee for the first year. Conditions apply. Must apply online by September 5, 2023.

Even when the three-month welcome offer ends, the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite delivers a strong return of 3% on gas, grocery, and recurring bills and 1% on all other purchases. That’s a compelling earn rate, particularly for families or those who spend big at the pump and on restocking the fridge. Plus, unlike some other cash back credit cards, with the TD Cash Back Visa Infinite, you can claim your cash back to pay down your balance whenever you want (minimum redemption of $25).

Thanks to the card’s included TD Auto Club Membership, you’ll also be covered during roadside emergencies such as in the case of a dead battery or tire change. That means you can ditch the CAA Membership and avoid paying the $100 or so in annual fees it costs to maintain it.

As mentioned, you get a Deluxe TD Auto Club Membership by being a TD Cash Back Visa Infinite cardholder, which helps to offset the $0 annual fee that comes with the card. You also get comprehensive travel insurance, discounts at Avis and Budget Rent-A-Car locations, as well as purchase security and extended warranty protection.

  • Welcome bonus: earn 10% Cash Back on all Purchases for the first 3 months up to a total spend of $2,000. Plus, no Annual Fee for the first year. Conditions apply. Must apply online by September 5, 2023.
  • Get 3% cash back on gas, groceries and recurring bills
  • Complimentary roadside assistance through Deluxe TD Auto Club membership
  • Travel medical and delayed/lost baggage insurance - uncommon for non-travel cards

  • $15,000 yearly spending cap for gas, groceries and recurring bills - after which the rate drops to 1%. Big spenders in these categories may want to consider partnering this card with one that offers non-capped rates
  • $60,000 minimum personal income requirement may pose a hurdle for some users

Looking for a TD credit card?

We've helped over a million Canadians find the perfect card for them. In under 60 seconds, we can help you too.

TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan

What makes TD credit cards particularly appealing is that TD will waive the annual fee on many of its premium cards if you also have a TD All-Inclusive Banking Plan. The caveat is that you’ll need to maintain $5,000 in your chequing account at all times to avoid the monthly account fee, but if that’s within your financial means, you could essentially have both a premium card and bank account for free. Even without an All-Inclusive account and when paying an annual fee however, TD cards do deliver great value.

TD Mobile Payment

For TD EasyWeb customers with an Android device, TD Mobile Payment can make daily purchases easier and more efficient.

At the counter, simply open the TD app on your phone, select which credit card you want to use (or set one card as a default) and hold it over the point of sale terminal for a few seconds to complete the transaction. It's a much quicker way to pay without having to worry about keeping track of physical cards in your wallet.
